Dither Test:

Test was performed using Pro Tools (non-dithered mixer). Setup was as follows:

A stereo channel was setup with a 500Hz sine wave at -80dBFS. A Waves L2 was inserted in this channel to perform conversions to 16 bit with and without dither, as well as running the original signal through this channel at 24 bit to ensure that the L2 was not creating these artifacts when using a 24 bit depth. These signals were used to produce the images below. The gain of the audio samples were increased (peak -14dBFS) so that the effects shown below could be more easily heard. All files were kept in a 24 bit format so that no further processing would be required beyond the above.

1. The signal using a 24 bit depth and no dither (no distortion present).

2. Signal runnning through L2 at 16 bit setting with no dither. Note the extreme amounts of harmonic distortion present in signal.

3. Signal running through L2 at 16 bits with dither (type 2 Ultra noise shaping). Note that there is significantly less harmonic distortion present and noise is moved toward a less audible range (around 16k).
